New Paradigm Learning

Schumacher College is a unique international educational insti-tution. It provides individuals and groups from across the world with the opportunity to learn on numerous levels about subjects relating to environmental and social sustainability.  Set on the vibrant Dartington Hall Estate in the south west of England, the College seeks to offer a positive educational space which integrates the concerns of governments, NGOs, businesses and individuals. Through a range of educational activities, participants are encouraged to consider some of the most urgent challenges of sustainability and to take responsibility for delivering effective solutions in their own working and personal environments. Participants, teachers and staff work together to combine and learn from diverse experiences and knowledge. The context of individual and group learning provides a powerful platform for deep and holistic engagement with transformative learning for sustainable living.

I AM was born from Director Tom Shadyac after a near-death exper-ience, “I didn’t want to hear the usual answers, like war, hunger, poverty, the environmental crisis, or even greed,” he explains.  “These are not the problems, they are the symptoms of a larger endemic problem.  In I AM, I wanted to talk about the root cause of the ills of the world, because if there is a common cause, and we can talk about it, air it out in a public forum, then we have a chance to solve it.” Ironically, in the process of trying to figure out what’s wrong with the world, Shadyac discovered there’s more right than he ever imagined.  He learned that the heart, not the brain, may be man’s primary organ of intelligence, and that human consciousness and emotions can actually affect the physical world. Shadyac also discovers that, contrary to conventional thinking, cooperation and not competition, may be nature’s most fundamental operating principle. The film further discovers that humans actually function better and remain healthier when expressing positive emotions.
Earth Pilgrim: A BBC documentary. To be an Earth Pilgrim is to revere Nature as our sacred home, and see all our life as a sacred journey to become at one with ourselves, with others and with Nature. The starting point for being an Earth Pilgrim is humility in the face of Nature’s immense generosity and unconditional love. Take the apple tree. We eat the fruit that has been freely given – and finding a bitter pip, we spit it out. Here the pip immediately starts to cooperate with Nature. The soil provides hospitality for the seed, which is nourished by the rain and the sunshine. Soon the pip has literally grounded itself and realized itself as another tree bearing innumerable apples and countless pips. When people ask me about reincarnation, I point to the apple tree. And when offering its fruit, the apple tree does not discriminate between human and animal, educated and uneducated, between black or white, man and woman, young and old. All are equal, and all receive.
The Story of Stuff is one of many must-see videos from Annie Leonard, who spent nearly two decades investigating environ-mental health and justice issues. She has traveled to 40 countries, visiting literally hundreds of factories where our stuff is made and dumps where our stuff is dumped. Witnessing first hand the horrendous impacts of both over – and under – consumption around the world, Annie is fiercely dedicated to reclaiming and transforming our industrial and economic systems so they serve, rather than undermine, ecological sustainability and social equity. The Story of Electronics, The Story of Cosmetics, The Story of Bottled Water, and The Story of Cap & Trade – her other amazing short videos – can be seen here.
Changing Education Paradigms with Sir Ken Robinson: This video is one of many must-sees by RSA Animate. In the light of new challenges and opportunities for the human race the purpose of RSA is to develop and promote new ways of thinking about human fulfillment and social progress which speaks directly to our strapline – 21st century enlightenment.
